Netball Tips For Kids

Netball is a great sport for kids as it not only involves lots of exercise for them but it educates them on the importance of team play. Whilst we have set up some drills below, they should be treated as games for them so they enjoy it and most importantly have fun.

Drill 1 – Warm Up

Always get kids to warm up. This doesn’t have to be anything sophisticated. Try the following drills:

  1. Star Jumps – this gets the heart beating and is a ton of fun – even for adults!
  2. Arm swings – make sure that they are well spaced out.
  3. Gentle jog around the court

Drill 2 – Tag

Split the group into two teams and give the ball to one of the team. They must pass the ball to one another without the other team tagging them. Only the player with the ball can be tagged so the idea is to keep the ball moving and moving into space. When a player is tagged, he joins the other team and the game is over until the last person is eventually tagged.

Drill 3 – Boss Ball

This involves two teams with each electing one of their players as the boss who will each stand on a bench at opposite ends of the court.

The idea is to get all your players in each team to join their boss on the bench by making a successful pass to him/her without the boss falling off the bench.  First to have all of their players join the boss wins.

A pass to the boss however cannot be made until a certain number of passes – say 5 though you can vary this or remove it all together if you wish – and you must otherwise adhere to the normal rules of netball.
